Background of the Study
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are vital to the Nigerian economy, contributing significantly to employment, income generation, and economic diversification. However, despite their importance, SMEs in Nigeria face numerous challenges, including high operational costs, limited access to finance, inadequate infrastructure, and an unstable macroeconomic environment. To address these challenges and stimulate growth, the Nigerian government has introduced tax rebates as part of its broader economic policies to support the SME sector.
Tax rebates, which allow SMEs to reduce their tax liabilities based on certain conditions such as reinvestment or meeting specific criteria, are intended to alleviate financial pressures and encourage reinvestment in business operations. In Port Harcourt, one of Nigeria's key industrial and commercial hubs, many SMEs have taken advantage of these incentives to improve their financial standing and expand their businesses.
Despite the widespread availability of these tax rebates, there is limited research on their actual impact on the financial performance of SMEs. While some studies suggest that tax incentives lead to enhanced liquidity and business expansion, others point to issues such as poor enforcement and limited awareness among SMEs as obstacles to the full utilization of these incentives.
Statement of the Problem
Although tax rebates are intended to improve the financial performance of SMEs, their actual impact on business outcomes in Port Harcourt remains unclear. While some SMEs have reported improved liquidity and growth, many continue to struggle with issues such as inadequate financial management, high cost of production, and limited access to additional funding. Furthermore, there is a need to explore how effectively these tax rebates are being implemented and whether they truly lead to improved financial performance across the SME sector.
The lack of comprehensive studies on the subject further complicates the understanding of the benefits and challenges associated with tax rebates for SMEs in Port Harcourt.
